HMRC warns of self-assessment scam

Taxpayers have been warned of a new scam doing the rounds following the deadline for self-assessment tax returns.

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has urged people not to respond to any email promising a tax repayment from the organisation, after thousands of these messages were sent in the run-up to the January 31st deadline.

The email attempts to coax the bank details of the recipient by promising a tax refund if they fill out an online form.

"We only ever contact customers who are due a refund in writing by post. We never use emails, telephone calls or external companies in these circumstances," HMRC stated.

Anybody who receives one of these scam emails should forward it to HMRC so that it can be investigated.

Employers and the self-employed in Wales were recently offered a series of workshops from HMRC designed to improve their corporation tax planning skills.
