The charges that have been brought against Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp are meant to deter others who conceal earnings from UK tax authorities, according to tax experts.
Redknapp was recently charged by the Crown Prosecution Service in connection with payments totalling £180,000 he received while manager of Portsmouth FC, International Adviser reports.
It has been alleged that he evaded tax and national insurance contributions totalling an estimated £40,000.
Andrew Watt, managing director of tax disputes and investigations at Alvarez & Marsal Taxand told the website: "It is a very small amount for the revenue to be chasing when compared to most cases they pursue and clearly demonstrates their intention to make an example of high-profile people such as Redknapp."
The National Fraud Authority recently reported that tax evasion has risen to £15.2 billion per year, almost 15 times more than benefit fraud, which costs £1.1 billion annually.
