The German government has defended its decision to buy stolen Swiss bank account data from a whistleblower by saying that the country's public has no tolerance for a state that fails in its duty to fight tax evasion.
German finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble made the announcement on Sunday (January 7th), saying that it would be "completely unbearable if the state didn't do everything possible to ensure taxes were collected fairly".
The UK's HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is now moving to capitalise on Germany's acquisition, as it believes that account details of British citizens may be among those in the data, according to the Financial Times.
It has echoes of a situation two years ago when HMRC offered a sum to a former employee of Liechtenstein's biggest bank LGT for a considerable amount of data, which led to a groundbreaking deal last year under which Liechtenstein agreed to cooperate with the UK.
